Israel-UAE

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed on Wednesday that he had made a secret trip to the UAE during the conflict with Iran and met with the country’s president, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while there. That would be the first publicly acknowledged meeting between the two leaders. However, within hours, the UAE denied that any such meeting had taken place. Despite the relatively close relationship between them, the UAE’s embarrassment is explained by its fear of being judged by other Arabs. Netanyahu will face elections later this year, and analysts said the leak was likely done for domestic purposes.

Iran Ceasefire

Iranian lawmakers are calling for annual fees to be imposed on fibre-optic cables crossing the Strait of Hormuz. It is believed that hundreds of billions of dollars of transactions move through those lines each day, and the UAE has become a global data center hub. Iran previously threatened to cut the cables during the war.

According to Iranian state media, thirty ships have sailed through the Strait of Hormuz with Iran’s permission since Wednesday.

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake hit Tehran. There was no reported damage or casualties.

South Korea is still conducting an investigation into whether Iran was behind the attack on a South Korean-operated cargo ship on 4 May. A senior government official said that Iran is certainly behind the attack and that South Korea will launch a ‘diplomatic offensive’ once it is confirmed.

Latvia

Latvia’s prime minister, Evika Silina, is resigning following the defence minister’s resignation and the coalition government’s collapse over Ukrainian drones that landed in Latvia. It is believed that Russian electronic warfare measures scrambled the drones’ navigation. Latvia’s air defences did not shoot them down.

China-US

Chinese President Xi Jinping warned President Trump that any mishandling of Taiwan could lead to “an extremely dangerous situation.” Xi also said that Taiwanese independence and cross-Strait peace are irreconcilable.

Afghanistan

Local sources claim that there were explosions and gunfire heard in Kabul, with the sounds of fighter jets and drones over the capital. The Taliban have not made a comment yet.

Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, Sergei Shoigu, claims that there are between 18,000 and 23,000 militants from more than twenty groups operating in Afghanistan. These claims were made at the meeting of the Security Council Secretaries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Arctic

The US Coast Guard and Davie Defense finalized a $3.5 billion contract to build five new Arctic Security Cutters, with construction split between Finland and Texas. Sorry Quebec. This is part of a program that aims to build 11 new Arctic Security Cutters.
