Iran
Former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was buried in his birthplace, Mashhad, at the Shrine of Imam Reza. His burial took place almost four months after he was killed in a bomb strike. His son Mojtaba, the current Supreme Leader, was absent from his funeral proceedings and thus further raised questions about whether he is indeed alive.
Gulf States increased cooperation in light of the recent Iranian attacks on their countries. Within 48 hours, there have been nearly seven rounds of consultations, including two official visits, five phone calls, and a series of official statements.
Israel reportedly shared intelligence on a new Iranian plot to assassinate President Trump. President Trump flew from Ankara aboard his old Air Force One to Britain, then switched to his new Air Force One, which Qatar gifted. This prompted speculation and has been reported to have been done so as a “security precaution”.
Syria
Syrian authorities arrested the terrorist cell that carried out bombings when French President Macron was in Damascus. According to Syrian authorities, the terrorists have Islamic State connections. One person was killed, and 36 were wounded in those attacks and in a previous bombing at a cafe a week prior, 10 people were killed, with 21 injured.
Ukraine-Russia War
Kremlin sources claim that President Putin rejected a ceasefire proposal from his own staff and reprimanded them. It is believed that the Ukrainian strikes on Russia have only further strengthened his resolve to capture the Donbas. This also comes as Russian spokesman Dmytry Peskov reiterates the same position.
The Ukrainian intelligence agent accused of killing the suspected Monaco bomber now claims that he did not kill her. In a Kyiv court, Vladyslav Reut now categorically denies shooting her and claims that his alleged accomplice did.
Mali
The Malian army, with the Russian African Corps, retook a key northern town. Anefis is 100km from Kidal, which is a strategic stronghold city that was taken by JNIM and Tuareg separatist rebels in April. JNIM and the rebels did counterattack, but reinforcements from Gao and airstrikes repelled the attack.
Mozambique
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited Mozambique. He offered Russia’s support in Mozambique’s war against terrorism. Islamic State-Mozambique Province operates in the oil-rich northern Cabo Delgado province and has an estimated strength of 300 fighters.
Afghanistan
Taliban army chief Fasihuddin Fitrat travelled to Nusay district for talks with the dissident commander Juma Khan Fateh. The two reportedly met, but no details were disclosed. The Taliban have been attempting to seize control of gold mining in the region from local authorities, including Fateh. Fasihuddin Fitrat is one of the Taliban’s most senior ethnic Tajik officials, and might play an effective role in mediating between the Taliban and Fateh.
