Poland
Early this morning, a Russian cruise missile, likely a Kh-101, penetrated 90km into Polish territory and landed in a field, leaving a large crater. The missile crashed in an undeveloped area near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin province. Polish President Donald Tusk stated that the Polish Air Force was ready to shoot it down if it continued its course.
Iran War
Western sources claim that six Iranian advisers were killed in Iraq during the US-Saudi strikes against Iranian-backed Iraqi militia sites. Western sources believe that some of the most prominent Iranian advisers were killed. These advisers were members of the IRGC’s Quds Force.
Iran claims that a ballistic missile strike on Jordan’s al-Azray air base destroyed three F-35s and severely damaged three more. There has been no confirmation of this by the US.
The US completed a “heavy wave of strikes against Iran” in response to Iran’s missile attack on the US base in Jordan.
Yemen’s Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani claims that the Houthi militants are working with Iran to charge a transit fee in the Red Sea. Al-Eryani claims that this was confirmed by “recently obtained confirmed intelligence” that IRGC experts and advisers are directly involved in setting up the framework for this.
Egypt
A drone hit a US-owned gas storage facility in Egypt at the port of Damietta. The Egyptian Petroleum Ministry confirmed that there was a fire at the port, but made no mention of a drone attack. There has been no confirmation whether the drone came from the Houthis, the Iranian-backed Iraqi militias or from Iran. This attack demonstrates that there is a security quagmire unfolding in the Middle East, as there are now three active opponents in the region.
Ukraine-Russia War
Ukraine hit one of Russia’s largest Lukoil-owned oil refineries. The facility, located in the city of Perm, processes more than 13 million metric tons of crude oil annually and produces gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and lubricating oils. A fire was reported at the refinery after the attack, and it is believed that it hit the primary oil-processing unit – one of the facility’s key installations.
Two more Wildberries warehouses were struck by Ukrainian drones overnight in the cities of Penza and Sarapul. Wildberries controls approximately half of Russia’s online retail market. Before these last two attacks, it is believed that Wildberries already lost 15.4% of its total floor space.
This also comes as Russia’s largest lender, Sberbank, reported that impaired loans rose to 5.5% of its portfolio by 0.7% from the previous quarter. Sberbank estimates that it accounts for 32.5% of Russia’s corporate lending market and 50.5% of retail lending. The bank’s total loan portfolio is 52.6 trillion rubles (657.5 billion USD), and therefore the bad loans would be equal to 2.9 trillion rubles (36.6 billion USD). With the continued attacks on Wildberries, this figure of bad loans will ultimately rise and put more pressure on the Russian economy.
Democratic Republic of Congo
The Congolese government stated in a national televised address that Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) reportedly agreed to disarm and demobilize. The group said that it is willing to return to Rwanda or to a third country if it would be accepted. The FDLR includes the remnants of Rwanda’s former army and militias responsible for the 1994 genocide. This is a step in the US-brokered peace deal between the Congo and Rwanda.
Mali
Amnesty International is calling for a war crimes investigation after videos suggest that Malian soldiers were executed after surrendering. Videos show that after the attack on the 18 July convoy outside of Anefis, 19 soldiers were walking with their hands behind their heads before being shot execution-style. The convoy was ambushed by al-Qaeda linked JNIM fighters and Tuareg separatists.
Afghanistan
The Taliban are preparing for a large-scale operation in Badakhshan and have deployed additional forces and senior commanders to the province. The Taliban claims that it has also deployed night patrols and guard duties amid fears of guerrilla attacks.
The UN Assistance Mission to Afghanistan reported that between April and June, the Taliban have shut down over 30 Ismaili places of worship, including 17 in the Zebak district. And during Ashura observances, the Taliban instructed Shia communities in Parwan and Logar provinces to hold ceremonies only in designated mosques. The Taliban is a Sunni Islamist movement and therefore is cracking down on other interpretations.
