Iran Ceasefire

A US fighter jet fired on an Iranian-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, which was headed to an Iranian port. The M/T Hasna was disabled.

The French aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle, and its strike group, have entered the Red Sea. This is part of planning for a potential mission to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. A French-British proposal has been discussed for weeks to secure the Strait after the conflict ends.

Saudi Arabia suspended the US’s ability to use its military bases and airspace in the country after President Trump announced the commencement of Project Freedom, to escort stranded tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia was concerned about how quickly things were happening, and there are suggestions that the US did not consult the Gulf States until after the announcement of Project Freedom.

It is possible that Iran will respond to the US proposal to end the war today, according to Pakistani sources.

Latvia

Two Russian drones entered Latvian airspace after being launched against Ukraine. Four empty oil tanks were hit at the storage facility in Rezekne. A small fire broke out at the facility, but it was quickly brought under control.

Russia-Ukraine

The oil windfall from the Iran War fell short of Moscow’s expectations. IT is being reported that “Oil and gas revenues totalled 855.6 billion rubles ($11.47 billion) in April, just 21 billion rubles ($0.28 billion) above the baseline level calculated using a budget oil price of $59 per barrel”. It was estimated that Russia would benefit from a “war premium” and rake in an extra 220 billion rubles ($2.95 billion).

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova urged all foreign embassies in Kyiv to evacuate, warning of “inevitable” retaliatory strikes if Ukraine targets Russia’s Victory Parade on Saturday.

President Zelensky stated that Ukraine will respond to Russian ceasefire violations with “long-range sanctions”. Zelensky has often referred to Ukraine targeting Russian oil and gas infrastructure as Ukraine’s sanctions package.

Lebanon

An Israeli strike in Beirut killed a senior Hezbollah commander. It is believed that it was Malek Ballout, the operations commander in the Radwan force, who was killed. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu announced that the military was targeting the elite Radwan force.

Mali

Mali has a new chief of general staff following the attacks that occurred almost two weeks ago. Elisée Jean Dao was promoted from brigadier general in the National Guard to the rank of major general. It is a new shakeup in the defence ministry after Mali’s military junta leader took over the role of defence minister as a move to shore up his authority.

Afghanistan

Reports indicate that Iran and the Taliban are creating a surveillance app for mobile phones which will track and monitor Afghans. It is believed that the app will collect sensitive data, including users’ locations, contacts, messages, internet browsing history and device access permissions.

Canada

The Carney government is pulling the plug on a Harper-era plan of converting a former Nanisivik lead-zinc mine site into a naval facility in the Arctic. The original announcement of the Nanisivik was tied to the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship. But the budget for Nanisivik was quickly eaten up by budgetary inflation for the AOPS, now the Harry de Wolfe class.
