Iran War
After an IRGC official claimed that Iran can continue the war until President Trump leaves office, Defence Security Pete Hegseth claims that the US can keep a naval blockade on Iranian ports indefinitely. The United States is attempting to keep the economic pressure on Iran. The United States Navy is sending the USS George Washington to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been at sea for more than 250 days, and there have been reports of deteriorating living conditions and worsening mental health amongst the crew.
Since the Iran War began at the end of February, the US has lost at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones due to being shot down or crashing. Each of these drones cost between $30 million and $50 million – or $1.35 billion to $2.25 billion in total.
Oil residue from a struck bulk carrier has reached Iran’s Qeshm island and its protected mangrove forests, and an oil slick from a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tanker grounded off Oman has expanded to more than 2,000 square kilometres and impacted 40 kilometres of Oman’s coastline. This is the first major environmental incident since the war began. Iran claims the cleanup near Qeshm Island is nearly complete.
Afghanistan
The National Resistance Front claims that they killed the Taliban mayor of Faizabad in Badakhshan. He is the second senior official targeted in the area in the past two weeks. The National Resistance Front is a separate opposition force not connected to the forces of dissident Taliban commander Juma Khan Fateh.
The Taliban claim that opposition forces remain divided and seek different political goals. This may be the case, but the Taliban also deny that any fighting is taking place in Badakshan, claiming that it is calm and the group has no problems there.
Local sources in Badakshan claim that a Taliban helicopter was shot down by the forces of Juma Khan Fateh. For the past two days, the Taliban and Fateh’s loyal fighters have been fighting.
Yemen
Houthi rebels attacked government forces and civilian areas on multiple fronts. Yemen’s government forces repelled these attacks. Houthi media acknowledged the deaths of 84 fighters over roughly a week, including 28 field commanders.
Türkiye
Pro-Kurdish lawmakers met with President Erdogan after the peace legislation was passed in Turkey’s 600-seat parliament with 468 votes in favour, 88 against, and six abstentions. The peace legislation aims to reintegrate former members of the Kurdish Workers’ Party or PKK, but has been criticized for not going far enough to release the founding leader of the PKK, Abdullah Ocalan, and for not referring to the issue as a Kurdish one.
Türkiye urged Egypt to join the defence agreement it signed with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, which stated that an attack on any of the three states will be treated as an attack on all. Erdogan hopes that if more countries sign the deal, it will stabilize the region from conflict. Egypt responded that they need to conduct an in-depth study of the defence pact’s “legal and constitutional considerations”.
Italy
An ammunition factory exploded in the Italian town of Colleferro, 40 kilometres from Rome. There were no casualties as employees sheltered in secure areas at the facility. The plant is owned by European defence group KNDS and manufactures medium and large-calibre ammunition and solid rocket fuel. The cause of the fire and the explosion is still being investigated.
United States-South Korea
President Trump signed a national security memorandum permitting foreign shipbuilders to build up to two ships in their parent shipyards for delivery to the United States. This is seen as a ramping up of shipbuilding cooperation between the United States and South Korea. South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean purchased the shipyard in Philadelphia in December 2024 and, a few days ago, made a preliminary offer of $1.2 billion to acquire Austal USA. South Korea pledged to invest $150 billion in the US shipbuilding sector as part of their total pledge to invest $350 billion in the United States.
