Iran War
Qatar denies Iranian allegations that they are detaining three Iranian pilots. The pilots violated Qatari airspace in March. Qatar claims that they found the remains of one of the pilots and contacted Iran to coordinate the handover of the remains. Iran is urging the International Red Cross to follow up on the case.
Iran offered a bounty equivalent to 30,000 USD for killing or capturing U.S. soldiers. If the killing or capturing is done by an Iranian woman, they will receive double the amount.
Iran countered President Trump’s remarks from this weekend that he will declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on X that “The Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian,” adding that “This strait will only be closed and opened under Iran’s command.”
President Trump threatened that the US would bomb Oman, one of its allies in the region, if it “gets in the way” of his efforts to end the US-Iran War. Both Iran and Oman have been in discussions over the Strait of Hormuz to create shipping lanes. Of course, the two are also talking about imposing some sort of transit fee. Iran and Oman are working to finalize their Hormuz agreement.
Yemen
This weekend, Yemeni government forces carried out more than 181 attacks on Houthi positions and more than 200 Houthi fighters were killed over the weekend. Yemen’s Armed Forces spokesperson Col. Majed al-Nazili said that “The operations focused on military targets, sources of fire, and capabilities used in carrying out hostile acts along the contact lines.” These attacks were not offensive in nature, but to degrade Houthi lethality on the frontline in a defensive posture.
Gaza
Saudi Arabia, together with seven other Arab and Islamic countries, condemned Israel’s rejection of the Gaza peace plan outlined by the Board of Peace.
Jared Kushner met with Hamas chief Khalil al-Hayya in the Egyptian coastal city of El-Alamein. Kushner met with Netanyahu after his meeting with al-Hayya. Hamas outlined that they will begin disarming only if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly commits to the terms of the peace plan. Netanyahu insists that Israel will withdraw, but not until Hamas has been completely disarmed.
Ukraine-Russia War
Ukraine began deploying British drones in deep strikes against Russia. BAE Systems Nyan Maritime One Way Effector (OWE), a jet-powered drone, has been used to hit oil refineries near Moscow, in Yaroslavl, and Volgograd.
Russia wants the US and Türkiye to explain reports of a possible arms transfer to Ukraine of US weapons and ammunition held by Türkiye. Türkiye requested US permission to send tens of thousands of artillery projectiles and cluster munitions rockets that have sat in Ankara’s stockpiles for decades.
Ukraine has not limited its attacks on Russia’s online retailer seller, Wildberries, to just drone attacks. Ukrainian military intelligence claims that cyber specialists hacked Wildberries, affecting customer services and payment processing.
Poland
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk claimed that Poland’s army will soon be the largest in Europe during the country’s Army Day celebrations on 15 August. The military parade in Warsaw saw a record-breaking 300 armoured vehicles and approximately 2,000 soldiers. Currently, Poland has the third-largest army in NATO with 216,000 personnel, up from 100,000 in 2014. Poland’s goal is to have 300,000 active-duty personnel with another 200,000 in the reserves.
South Korea
President Trump ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises, possibly as a gesture toward North Korea, as he said he has a very good relationship with Kim Jong-un. But Trump also cited that South Korea has not helped the US with the Iran situation. Joint exercises were scaled down or suspended during Trump’s first term in office. South Korea’s presidential office said it hopes Trump’s friendship with Kim Jong-un will lead to bilateral talks on peace on the Korean Peninsula.
According to a report by cybersecurity firm S2W, cyberattacks from state-sponsored hacking groups from North Korea, China and Russia increased by 7.5 percent this year. North Korea remained the most active, accounting for 99 incidents — a 13.8 percent jump from the previous six-month period. Russian-backed cyber operations surged 30 percent to 26 incidents, but were not limited to Ukraine, but also in Eastern European countries.
Afghanistan
The Afghanistan Freedom Front clashed with Taliban forces in the Zebak district of Badakhstan. The AFF described it as a preemptive attack on Taliban positions; fighting took place in the Topkhana area of Zebak, with both sides using light and heavy weapons.
Sources claim that the dissident Taliban commander, Juma Khan Fateh, and his forces left their military positions and surrendered to the Taliban. Fateh reportedly flew from Nusay to the Darwaz district with the Taliban’s army chief Fasihuddin Fitrat. For the past week, Fateh’s forces have been fighting the Taliban.
After five years of Taliban rule, the Taliban’s foreign minister called for the reopening of the US embassy in Kabul and urged the US to invest in Afghanistan’s vast mineral reserves, dams and roads. Something the US and its NATO partners did during the war. The US State Department rejected the prospect, citing that the Taliban have failed to honour their counter-terrorism commitments.
Democratic Republic of Congo
According to government data, the death toll of the Ebola outbreak reached 2,325 people, surpassing the toll from the 2018-2020 outbreak to become the deadliest in the country’s history. The DRC reports that confirmed cases have reached 4,945, making the 17th Ebola outbreak for the DRC the biggest in the country’s history in terms of number of cases.
Morocco
Moroccan media reports that hundreds of would-be migrants were intercepted on Saturday in northern Morocco near the border with the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. 294 people were arrested, 46 of them Moroccan and the rest from sub-Saharan Africa. These arrests come after the storming of 49,000 to 60,000 illegal migrants two weeks ago. Chris Murray and Stewart Webb discussed the wider implications of the mass migration attempt on the DefenceReport podcast.
