US-Iran

Over the weekend, American warplanes attacked Iranian radar sites and drone command-and-control facilities on Qeshm Island and Gorik in Iran’s Hormozgan province. The strikes came after Iran shot down an American MQ-1 drone, Central Command said. U.S. fighters also shot down two Iranian attack drones that posed a threat to ships, it said. Kuwait said Monday morning the country was under attack by Iranian missiles and drones, and condemned them as a dangerous escalation. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman called the strikes a defensive action following the U.S. attacks.

US-Asian Allies

In Singapore for the Shangri-La Dialogue, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said “The era of the US subsidizing the defence of wealthy nations is over. We need partners, not protectorates.” Hegseth reaffirmed America’s position as a Pacific nation, but notably softened his tone on China, which was more confrontational last year. He also said that Chinese and American defence officials are meeting more frequently to prevent miscalculations. Notably, China sent its lowest-level delegation since senior Chinese military officers started attending the conference nearly two decades ago.

AUKUS

Australia’s defence minister announced that the country will no longer purchase two used Virginia-class nuclear submarines and one new Virginia-class submarine. The country has now opted to buy all three submarines secondhand from the United States Navy. Marles stated that there would be huge cost savings from the dramatic changes to the AUKUS deal.

Australia, Great Britain and the United States will develop underwater drone technology together to protect undersea cables and bolster defence ties. AUKUS was formed in 2021 and there has been slow progress, including the purchase of nuclear-powered submarines for Australia.
