US-Iran Ceasefire

A lasting ceasefire between Iran and the United States is unlikely to continue if Israel continues its Lebanon operations. There have been murmurings that Iran will activate the Houthis to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Lebanon says that Hezbollah accepted the US plan for the halt of Israeli attacks and that Israel would not attack Beirut. In exchange, Hezbollah would not attack IDF forces. Netanyahu stated that the ceasefire would continue “if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our cities and civilians”.

Russia-Ukraine War

Russian financial officials told President Putin that the war is becoming economically unviable. Senior officials told Putin that war spending is on an unaffordable path. They warned that defence spending needs to be cut and efficiencies found to make defence spending more effective.

Crimea’s largest gas station suspended the use of fuel vouchers as the fuel shortage worsens. TES, which operates 115 gas stations, introduced the measures on 22 May to prevent panic buying but has since extended them. According to The Moscow Times: “Ordinary motorists who want to purchase AI-92 gasoline face a strict cap of 20 liters (5.2 gallons) per vehicle, and filling jerry cans or canisters has been banned entirely to prevent hoarding.”

Russia-Taliban

Russia stated that companies from Tatarstan could provide in-service support for equipment of Soviet/Russian origin for the Afghan Taliban. This comes after Russia and the Afghan Taliban signed a military cooperation agreement last year.

Kenya

Hundreds of Kenyans protested outside the Ebola quarantine centre for US citizens after Kenya’s High Court suspended its establishment. The US said that it would begin sending Americans who were exposed to Ebola to the Laikipia Air Base and would be operational with 50 quarantine beds by Friday. Two people were shot dead in the protest.

Afghanistan

Pakistan dismissed the Afghanistan Taliban’s warning to Tehrike-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Pakistan says that the warnings are “insufficient” as there is no action against the terrorist group operating in Afghanistan, which supported the Afghan Taliban throughout its campaign against ISAF forces.

The UN says that only 16 percent of aid funding has been met in Afghanistan. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said that by last month, only $269 million, or 16% of the $1.71 billion required for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan this year, had been secured.
