US-Iran

The US targeted an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian missiles struck the Kuwaiti International Airport. Kuwait says that it engaged 13 missiles and 17 drones. The fighting escalated after the US disabled an empty oil tanker that it said was attempting to breach its blockade and load oil at Iran’s Kharg Island.

President Trump called Prime Minister Netanyahu “fucking crazy” in a phone call between the two. The two reportedly do swear and talk candidly on the phone. But Trump did go on a tirade that Netanyahu should be thankful to Trump for keeping him out of jail over previous corruption charges. Trump aimed his frustration at Netanyahu for expanding his operations in Lebanon. 

Ukraine-Russia War

Just as Russia’s economic forum begins, Ukraine launched drones at St. Petersburg. Several facilities were hit outside Russia’s second-largest city. Ukraine says that it hit the Saint Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Kronstadt military base in the city.

Gas stations in Moscow and northern Russia have introduced fuel rationing measures. Lukoil gas stations have limited purchases to 100 litres (26.42 gallons) per driver. ORTK, which operates 36 gas stations across Moscow and the Moscow region, limited purchases to 60 litres (15.85 gallons) of gas per driver and 100 litres (26.42 gallons) of diesel per driver.

United States

The Pentagon has reclassified the press office as a classified space; therefore, journalists are not allowed in the Pentagon’s press office. The Pentagon says it is because Hegseth’s speechwriters often share the room and that they “routinely handle classified material and require SIPRNet access.” For many, it is seen as the latest measure to limit press freedom within the Pentagon. 

A January 6 rioter has been hired within the US Department of Defence’s special operations and low-intensity conflict office. Elias Irizarry, who was 19 at the time of the riot, pled guilty to a misdemeanour charge in connection with the storming of the US Capitol.

Canada

The Department of National Defence confirms the purchase of 26 HIMARS rocket launchers from the US. The $2.6 billion purchase will include preliminary operational stock of munitions and spare parts, as well as training and support services. Delivery of the rocket systems is not expected until 2029. 

Democratic Republic of Congo

The United States imposed fresh sanctions on the M23 and Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). The new sanctions target John Imani Nzenze, the intelligence chief of the M23 rebel movement, and Gustave Kubwayo, also known as “Colonel Sirkoof,” a senior commander within the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).
