Iran Ceasefire

The US House voted to end the war in Iran after the Presidential War Powers had expired. Some Republicans joined the Democrats in voting to end the war, and the vote passed 215-208. It now heads to the US Senate. Trump slammed it as unpatriotic and that it occurred “right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran.” If it passes in the Senate, Trump has two options. He would be required to either withdraw troops from Iran or gain Congress’ approval for the war.

Lebanon

Despite a ceasefire, Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, stated that the IDF will continue its operation in Lebanon. IDF soldiers will remain in the territory that they seized, including Beaufort Castle, and dismantle the Hezbollah network in their security zone.

Iraq

Two Iranian-backed militias in Iraq stated that they will begin to disarm and hand in their weapons to government authorities. New government measures to rein in these militias were made by Iraq’s top Shiite religious authority and the Iran-aligned Coordination Framework, the largest bloc in Parliament that dominates Iraqi politics. Asaib Ahl al-Haq & the Imam Ali Brigades are forming committees to oversee the handover of weapons and equipment to the Iraqi military.

North Korea

Kim Jong-un unveiled a new nuclear fuel production facility that will produce weapons-grade uranium for nuclear bombs. North Korea’s state-run news agency showed images of a hall of centrifuges. Kim Jong-un claims that enriched uranium production has doubled over the past five years.

Mali

The Malian military junta has proclaimed that the “circulation of motorcycles with an engine capacity of 125 cc and above, outside major urban centres, is suspended throughout the entire national territory”. Motorcycles are the predominant mode of transportation for jihadists.

NATO

The United States is demanding that Canada and Europe increase their air and naval defences. US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO’s top commander and the head of U.S. forces in Europe, made the statement following the Trump administration’s decision to reduce the number of assets that would be available to assist NATO forces. This was the first public indication of where the administration is reducing.

Somalia

Heavy gunfire has erupted in Mogadishu after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s term was extended by another year. His term did end on 15 May. Former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire said he had been attacked by government forces while he and other leaders were preparing for Thursday’s “peaceful” demonstrations. Somalia has not had a one-person, one-vote election since 1969.
