United States

A new federal lawsuit seeks to end any Pentagon influence over the publication “Stars & Stripes.” In January, it was announced that the Department of War would “modernize” Stars and Stripes and refocus the publication on “reporting for our warfighters.” It was observed that the Department of War would limit congressionally backed editorial independence. 

Lebanon

Hezbollah rejects the renewed ceasefire deal agreed to by Israel and Lebanon. Hezbollah demands that Israeli forces withdraw from the country entirely. 

China-North Korea

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit North Korea next week Monday and Tuesday, and will “exchange views on bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest,” with Kim Jong-un.  This is Xi’s first trip since October 2025, when he went to South Korea and his first trip back to North Korea in 7 years. Analysts believe that Xi will try to reassert Chinese dominance over North Korea, which has increasingly aligned itself with Russia. 

Ukraine-Russia

On Thursday night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, offering a face-to-face meeting and a ceasefire during negotiations on a broader peace deal.

President Putin stated that Russia will bolster its air defences against surging Ukrainian drone strikes. The Associated Press posed a question about the drone strike during a media session on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

A Ukrainian sea drone exploded in a Romanian port after being jammed by Russian electronic countermeasures. There were no reports of casualties, but Ukrainian drones are increasingly ending up in European countries due to Russian countermeasures. 

Mali

Mali is offering a $3.5 million reward for the or information leading to the arrest or killing of the leader of Al-Qaeda’s Sahel branch, JNIM. Iyad Ag Ghaly is a former diplomat and Tuareg rebel. Ghaly also established JNIM in 2017.

Nigeria

Nigerian protestors have taken to the streets in the capital, Abuja, demanding the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State. Recurring abductions from school have been occurring across the country.
