Iran Ceasefire
Over the weekend, Israel and Iran exchanged blows after an Israeli strike on Beirut triggered an Iranian counterattack. Iran fired missiles at Israel in several waves of attacks that the Israeli military said included close to 30 ballistic missiles. In response, Israel targeted central and western Iran, attacking air defence systems and a major petrochemical facility. Attacks from both sides continued on Monday, while Trump issued a short post on his Truth Social platform, saying, “Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting.’”
The Houthi rebels fired a missile at Israel. It was the first missile attack on Israel since April. The group also declared that it would target Israeli shipping in the Red Sea.
China-North Korea
Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in North Korea today for his two-day summit with Kim Jong Un. He said China and North Korea should “resolutely defend our respective sovereignty, security, and development interests, and jointly safeguard regional peace and development.” Xi aims to cement China’s role as North Korea’s most important benefactor, while Kim aims to assert greater autonomy. Nevertheless, cooperation between the two will likely increase. Xi said that the recent resumption of passenger trains and flights between Beijing and Pyongyang would expand exchanges. The neighbours also vowed to strengthen cooperation in tourism.
Philippines
At least 19 people were killed and thousands displaced after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit near the southern Philippines city of General Santos this morning. Tsunami warnings were issued, and as many as 138 aftershocks occurred after the initial earthquake.
United Kingdom
HMS Prince of Wales is docked in Stavanger, Norway, following a technical issue which disrupted its NATO deployment. Recurring rudder issues have plagued the Prince of Wales and her sister ship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, before.
The Royal Navy’s entire available fleet of nuclear attack submarines is in dock awaiting maintenance. All five of the Astute-class are in dock, while a sixth, which was commissioned, is not ready to deploy.
Sudan
A peace process has been announced by rival Sudanese political and civil forces. The process will outline how to end the civil war. “The meetings brought together the Democratic Bloc, Somoud, and the Tasis alliance, which is aligned with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). But the talks themselves were held between the Democratic Bloc and Somoud after members of the Democratic Bloc refused to sit with the Tasis delegation.”
Nigeria
The Nigerian military states that they have freed 360 people who were held by Boko Haram in southern Borno. Two infants died due to “exhaustion”, but the remaining people were evacuated to medical centres.
Armenia
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s ruling party won the latest election, and thus cementing Armenia’s shift toward the EU from Russia. Pashinyan’s party received 49.8% of the vote, with the Strong Armenia Alliance coming in second with 23.2%. The Armenia Alliance was third with 9.9%.
Latvia
A French Rafale fighter jet shot down a Ukrainian drone over eastern Latvian airspace. The drone entered Latvia’s airspace due to Russian electromagnetic warfare countermeasures.
