Iran Ceasefire

Iran’s military is warning that the US blockade of Iranian ports may lead to Iran closing the Red Sea. The announcement came from Iranian State TV via the head of the military’s central command center. This would mean that the Houthi rebel group in Yemen would become active in this conflict.

Trump claims that he asked President Xi not to provide weapons to Iran and that XI agreed not to. This comes after US intelligence officials warned that China was preparing to send air defence systems to Iran in the form of MANPADS.

South China Sea

Satellite images show that China is employing ships and a barrier to tighten control of the entrance to the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. This comes amid ongoing tensions between China and the Philippines. China has deployed four fishing boats, a Chinese naval or coast guard ship, and a new floating barrier, as the Philippines sends its own coast guard and fisheries vessels to support its fishermen, who are frequently driven away by larger Chinese patrols. It is a hotly contested area that some believe could lead to wider conflict.

Israel-Lebanon

Israeli and Lebanese officials met in Washington for direct talks — the first time since 1993. Lebanon wants a ceasefire as Israel continues to secure its security buffer zone, which is Lebanese territory up to the Litani River. While Israel’s position is that it wants Hezbollah disarmed and disbanded. Lebanese officials agreed that they no longer want to be held hostage by the embedded terrorist group.

Trump Tariffs

Next week, the Trump Administration is expected to begin accepting claims for refunds from tariffs that the US Supreme Court ruled were illegal. The refund claims that the government said it can start accepting about $127 billion of the $166 billion it collected in tariffs. More than 53 million imports were affected by the tariffs, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been working to build a system to handle refunds since March.

Canada

Some Canadian military personnel are facing cuts to their allowances for out-of-country service due to a new government directive. The cuts are between $1,000 and $1,500, and, according to the Ottawa Citizen, those affected were given only a week’s notice before the cuts were implemented in their paycheques.

Sudan

The UN reports that nearly 700 civilians have been killed in Sudan by drone strikes since January. The war continues between government forces and the RSF, which has led to the killing of tens of thousands and the displacement of more than 11 million people.

Brazil

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials detained Brazil’s former chief of intelligence, Alexandre Ramagem. Ramagem is accused of plotting a military coup aimed at keeping Bolsonaro in power after he had lost the 2022 election. Ramagem will appear before a US immigration judge and may be deported to Brazil to face charges.
