Iran Ceasefire

The head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, David Barnea, claims that its operations will not cease until there is regime change in Iran. Speaking at a Holocaust remembrance ceremony, Barnea further claimed that up until the recent bombing, Mossad had operatives in the heart of Tehran. 

Iran’s Central Bank estimates that it will take 12 years for the economy to recover from the 40-day war with the United States and Israel. It is not just the oil and petrochemical facilities that have been struck; airports critical to Iran’s supply chains have been hit, and, of course, the internet shutdown has cut off millions of entrepreneurs from customers, payment systems, and online platforms.

American and Iranian negotiating teams could return to Pakistan this week. There has been no confirmation of this from US officials. An Iranian source stated that nothing has been set, but the team is keeping “Friday to Sunday” open in case the next round happens. 

The Iraqi Ministry of Oil stated that it has “understandings” with the US regarding the movement of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz to bypass the US blockade. South Korea sent a list of 26 Korea-related ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz as part of a diplomatic effort to ensure safe passage. 

Germany-Ukraine

Chancellor Merz hosted President Zelenskyy to discuss Ukraine’s ambition to join the EU, reconstruction, and defence deals, including bilateral drone partnerships. Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine is not seeking EU- or NATO-light membership, but rather full membership in those organizations. The German-Ukrainian relationship has been elevated to a “strategic partnership” as a result of these talks.

North Korea

Kim Jong-un observed the test firing of strategic cruise and anti-warship missiles from the destroyer Choe Hyon. The use of the term ” strategic implies that North Korea claims that the cruise missiles could be nuclear-armed. Kim Jong-un called for “bolstering up the powerful and reliable nuclear war deterrent steadily and without limit” as the nation’s “most important priority task.”

Cameroon

Cameroon separatists announced that they will pause fighting as Pope Leo XIV is set to visit the country. The Unity Alliance, which brings the groups together, stated that it would pause fighting, but there has been no word from the government. The conflict in Cameroon has been going on for nearly a decade and has left 6,000 dead and many more forced from their homes.
