Ukraine-Russia War
Putin has declared a unilateral two-day “Victory Day ceasefire” on 8-9 May. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that there was no official communication to Ukraine about the potential ceasefire, but it was communicated to President Trump in a telephone call in April.
Zelensky announced his own ceasefire starting on 6 May. Ukraine’s position is that it will commence an open-ended ceasefire from midnight on 6 May and will act “symmetrically” from that point on. Essentially, if Putin wants his ceasefire, Russian troops will have to start a day earlier.

Mali
Mali’s military leader, General Assimi Goïta, will take over the post of defence minister after the defence minister was killed in a car bomb attack last weekend. It is believed that this is a consolidation of power as Goïta’s leadership is under question with the country-wide attacks from jihadists and ethnic Tuareg rebels.
Nigeria
A state-backed Nigerian militia, operating alongside the military, killed dozens of ethnic Fulani herders as part of an operation to quell the al-Qaeda-linked Ansaru group. The operation also involved the Nigerian vigilantes going door to door, arresting young men suspected of being informants and shooting those who resisted.
Democratic Republic of Congo
Thousands of pro-government supporters took to the streets of the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, on Monday in support of United States sanctions against Joseph Kabila. A Congolese military court sentenced Kabila to death in absentia for treason for “complicity” with the M23/AFC alliance.
Austria
Austria is expelling three Russian embassy staff on suspicion of spying after determining that a “forest of antennae” was located at the embassy. It is believed that the antennae were used to collect data. This brings the total amount of Russian diplomats expelled from Austria since 2020 to 14.
