Strait of Hormuz

President Trump announced that, starting today, the US Navy will begin escorting stranded vessels and seafarers through the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command said the initiative would involve guided-missile destroyers and more than 100 aircraft.

Iran claims that it has blocked a US Navy warship from entering the Strait, and oil prices shot up 5%. Iran views the “Project Freedom” initiative as a violation of the ceasefire. The regime continues to request that ships coordinate with the IRGC through the Strait.

US-Europe

The Trump administration announced that it will cut 5,000 soldiers from service in Germany. The decision came after Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Iran humiliated the Trump administration by failing to attend negotiations. President Trump also announced that he may remove troops from Italy and Spain, obviously due to the limitations they imposed on the US during the Iran War.

Mali

The military junta is investigating at least five soldiers and an exiled politician over possible connections with the coordinated Tuareg and jihadist attacks. The Military Court of Bamako stated that there “solid evidence regarding the complicity of certain military personnel”.

A former Malian minister and critic of the ruling junta was abducted from his home by armed, hooded men. The ex-minister’s residence was in Bamako, and it is believed that he was taken by the military junta. Mountaga Tall was Mali’s education and science minister from 2016 to 2017 and is the president of the National Congress for Democratic Initiative, a political party opposed to the military government.

Ukraine-Russia

A Ukrainian drone struck a high-rise residential complex near central Moscow early Monday. The building in question is the Dom na Mosfilmovskoy, a prominent luxury residential complex located around 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from the Kremlin. This comes ahead of the annual Victory Parade that celebrates Russia’s win over Nazi Germany. This year the parade has been scaled back over fears of Ukrainian strikes.

For the first time since 2024, Russia lost territory it had captured. It is believed that Ukraine has taken back 116 square kilometers in April as Russian troops abandoned their positions. This is more indicative of the front slowing down rather than a reversal.

United States

The Department of War signed eight agreements with Google, OpenAI, Amazon, Microsoft, SpaceX, Oracle, Nvidia and the start-up Reflection. The Pentagon said that this is the first step toward the US military being an AI-driven fighting force. Anthropic was absent from the list and is in the middle of a lawsuit with the federal government.

Israel

Israel plans to purchase two new combat squadrons of F-35 and F-15IA advanced fighter aircraft from ‌Lockheed Martin and Boeing. The deal will be worth billions. It is the first step in a 350 billion shekel ($119 billion) plan to bolster Israel’s military.

Mexico-US

On Friday, the Governor of the Mexican state of Sinaloa announced he would temporarily step down after being accused of drug trafficking by US officials. Gov. Rubén Rocha said that he requested a leave of absence after Mexico’s federal government launched an investigation to determine whether he should be arrested and extradited to the U.S. Others accused by the US include a sitting federal senator and the mayor of Sinaloa state capital Culiacán, Juan de Dios Gámez, who also stepped down on Friday. Many of the accused, including Rocha, are members of Mexico’s ruling Morena party.

OPEC+

OPEC+ members agreed to raise production by 188,000 barrels in June, a mostly symbolic increase, but nevertheless, the third consecutive month of increases. The organization is attempting to show unity after the UAE’s shock exit. Some analysts also see Iraq leaving the cartel.
