The Five Eyes Intelligence alliance warns that AI is developing at a pace where it will outsmart prevailing cybersecurity within months, not years. In a joint statement: “The rapid pace of frontier AI development means cyber risk assumptions can become outdated in months, not years.” The full statement can be read here.
Iran
Iran states that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will not be permitted to inspect the bombed nuclear sites. This contrasts with what US Vice President J.D. Vance stated yesterday. Talks between the US and Iran continue, but they will be more technical and policy-focused.
The US authorized the sale of Iranian oil on the global market until 21 August. This is the first time Iran has been authorized to do so since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The outcome of this war is that Iran should be more inclusive within the global economy, and hopefully the regime will focus on economic woes within the country. At least that is the position taken by the Trump administration.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett claims that Israel smuggled tens of thousands of Starlink units into Iran to support the protesters. Bennett claims that Netanyahu failed to carry out the operation.
The pilot of the downed US F-15 claims that he witnessed a “jellyfish” formation of Iranian drones that were synced in unison. If it is true, it is an advancement in Iranian drone capabilities, with both larger and smaller drones operating together.
Afghanistan
Russia is financing an elite Taliban unit, according to sources within the Taliban’s Ministry of Defence. A new 8,000-member special forces unit known as the “Hibati Unit” will be focusing on operations against ISIS-K. It is also believed that this unit will answer directly to Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada and will be outside the Taliban chain of command. Also, suggesting that this unit will be Akhundzada’s Pretorian guard.
Türkiye
Turkish authorities detained 209 people, while 32 others remained at large, ahead of the upcoming NATO summit. “Prosecutors said that 56 of those arrested were alleged members of the so-called Islamic State group and 35 were members of the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP-C), a communist group designated a terrorist organization by Turkey that has claimed responsibility for past attacks. “
Lebanon
The IDF found a Hezbollah tunnel with attack drones in the heart of Majdal Zoun. The IDF permitted some journalists to examine the tunnel, “which contained over 50 attack drones and a room packed with eight tons of mines and bombs.” The IDF claims that the tunnel was Iranian-designed, as building “a tunnel with a launch site is an Iranian method.”
Kenya
Kenya halted the controversial plans to build an Ebola treatment centre for US citizens. This centre drew the ire of many Kenyans, who protested in the streets. Kenyan Health Minister Aden Dual was also held in contempt for ignoring a previous stop-work order.
South Korea-Ukraine
The South Korean government will accept all North Korean POWs in Ukraine if they choose to defect. Ukraine continues to hold two North Korean POWs who wish to defect to South Korea. South Korea opposes any forced transfer of North Korean POWs to Russia or North Korea.
