Canada
Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce later today which company won the competition for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project. The competition is down to TKMS with the 212CD and Hanwha Ocean with the KSS-III. This procurement has been intense, as both companies have had to broaden economic ties in Canada to get their bids approved. This procurement will set the tone for the rest of the Carney government’s defence bids as it aims to revitalize the Canadian Armed Forces. Although not formally announced, South Korean media is reporting that TKMS won the bid.
Europe
France pushed for the UK not to be part of the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme, and it backfired just a tad for French industry. The French government requested €16.2 billion from SAFE, but only €15.1 billion was approved due to UK-linked projects. The only non-European Union country approved to join SAFE is Canada.
Mali
Coordinated attacks across the country took place this weekend. Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and the regional al-Qaeda affiliation, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), attacked five locations in Aguelhok, Anefis, and Gao in the north, Sevare in the central region, and Kenieroba in the south.
NATO Summit
Türkiye is looking to acquire F110 GE engines from the United States during the upcoming NATO summit. The F110 engine is vital for the country’s new fighter jet program. Last month, President Trump promised, “to make Erdogan ‘very happy’ when asked about Türkiye looking to secure F110 jet engines and being readmitted to the F-35 fighter jet program.”
President Trump will meet with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine and President al-Sharaa of the Syrian Arab Republic during the upcoming NATO summit. Trump will ‘follow up’ with Putin after the summit, and it is expected that Trump would talk to Netanyahu after the summit over recent Israeli incursions into Syria.
United Kingdom
British fighter jets intercepted a Russian maritime patrol aircraft after it deployed 10 sonobuoys near HMS Prince of Wales. The Russian Bear-F plane repeatedly approached the carrier strike group in the Norwegian Sea. It also marked the first time NATO conducted air policing operations from a European aircraft carrier.
Israel/Palestine
Hamas announced that it will dissolve its governing body, which has governed the Gaza Strip for nearly two decades. Disarmament of the group still remains a key issue between Hamas and Israel. The dissolution of Hamas’ governing body is to make way for the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), which was created by the Board of Peace.
China
China today announced that it test-fired a ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine. The missile was fired at 12:01 p.m. Monday, carrying a simulated warhead to a designated area in the Pacific Ocean. Chinese aeronautical and maritime organizations indicate the missile was likely launched from Bohai Bay in northeastern China and flew to the South Pacific. The test was likely of a JL-2 or a newer JL-3 missile that travelled more than 7,000 kilometres (4,350 miles). This occurred hours after Australia and Fiji signed a new defence pact.
Nigeria
After the US deployed approximately 200 soldiers to Nigeria to assist with the fight against ISIS earlier this year, the United States withdrew most of these troops. The United States and Nigeria conducted joint operations in the Lake Chad basin area where the Islamic State-West African Province predominately operates. Intelligence sharing between the countries will continue.
