US Economy

The Commerce Department said U.S. gross domestic product rose at a seasonally adjusted and inflation-adjusted 2% annual rate in the first quarter, slightly missing analyst expectations of 2.2%. Growth was largely driven by increased business spending, with nonresidential fixed investment rising at a 10.4% rate.

The national average price of gasoline per gallon in the US is $4.30.

President Trump warned that the Iran blockade could last months. Trump is also expected to receive a briefing from Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, about new plans for military action against Iran.

The USS Gerald R. Ford is leaving the Middle East in the coming days after setting a record-breaking deployment of more than 300 days at sea. The USS George H.W. Bush arrived in the region last week.

Burkina Faso

Following the JNIM attacks this past weekend, Burkina Faso is tightening security in the capital Ouagadougou and across the country. JNIM has been operating in Burkina Faso for some time now and has been taking territory from the government.

White House-Anthropic

The White House is opposed to an Anthropic plan to expand access to its most powerful model, Mythos, to an additional 70 companies over security concerns. Anthropic initially granted access to about 50 companies and organizations that manage critical infrastructure and doesn’t plan a public rollout. Some government agencies have access, and the Trump administration is working to expand that.

US-Germany

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he is considering withdrawing American troops from Germany, without specifying a number. The announcement appears to be in response to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s comments that the U.S. lacks an effective strategy to end the war in Iran. The U.S. currently has between 30,000 and 35,000 troops stationed in Germany, as well as thousands of Pentagon civilian personnel.

South Korea

South Korea and the US are not in talks of drawing down the 28,500 American soldiers within the country. This comes after the news from Germany, but the Trump administration is looking at “modernizing” alliances, which may mean a drawdown further down the road.

With greatly improved relations between North Korea and Russia, South Korea will send an attaché responsible for unification affairs to its embassy in Russia. The idea is that South Korea will be able to hold backroom discussions with Russia that may influence the North Korean regime toward unification.

North Korea

North Korea is facing the worst drought in recent years. The country of 26 million already faces food shortages, and is taking measures to improve water reservoirs and waterways.

US-Mexico

The US has charged the Governor of Mexico’s Sinaloa State, along with other officials, with drug trafficking. The Justice Department said that Sinaloa Gov. Rubén Rocha partnered with leaders of the country’s powerful Sinaloa cartel to smuggle drugs into the U.S. in exchange for political support and bribes. The U.S. has requested his arrest and extradition to the U.S. Rocha denied the charges against him and said it was an attack against Mexico and the ruling Morena party. Mexico’s Foreign Ministry said the extradition request lacks sufficient evidence against the accused.

Taiwan

Taiwan’s economy expanded at the fastest rate in 39 years as the demand for AI computing power grows. Gross domestic product expanded 13.69% in the first quarter from a year earlier. That beat the 11.3% growth expected and marked its highest level since 1987. Analysts warn that Taiwan is extremely reliant on foreign gas supplies, which may weigh on future growth, with much of the island’s energy grid reliant on natural gas. TSMC alone accounts for about 10% of the island’s electricity use.
