Iran Ceasefire

President Trump is reportedly planning a long blockade of Iran. It is believed that the Iranians are not negotiating in good faith and that Trump plans to continue the blockade to force Iran to the negotiating table on its nuclear program. It is not just oil and LNG that pass through the Strait, but also considerable amounts of helium, agricultural fertilizers, etc.

The UN says that Iran has executed at least 21 people and arrested over 4,000 since the beginning of the war. This includes people arrested for the January 2026 protests, alleged members of opposition groups and those accused of espionage.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth will be grilled by US lawmakers for the first time since the war with Iran began. The hearing before the House Armed Services Committee will discuss the Trump administration’s plan to boost defence spending to $1.5 trillion. Expect discussions on the cost of the war as well.

Mali

President Goita, the head of Mali’s military junta, made his first public address since the weekend attacks, stating that the security situation is under control but acknowledging it as “of extreme gravity”. JNIM claims it is now imposing a total blockade on the capital, as it did during the fuel blockade from September to March. However, no one will be able to enter the capital.

A spokesman for the ethnic Tuareg separatist group, Azawad Liberation Front, pledged that the military junta will fall and that Russian forces will withdraw from the country.

Russia

Russia’s annual parade commemorating its victory over Nazi Germany will be on 9 May as always, but for the first time in 81 years it will not display military vehicles. The Ministry of Defence stated on Telegram that several military schools and cadet corps…“as well as the military hardware column, will not be participating in this year’s military parade due to the current operational situation.”

North Korea

Kim Jong-un praised North Korean troops who “self-blasted” to avoid capture by Ukrainian forces. It confirms a suspicion that North Korean troops have been ordered to commit suicide to avoid capture. It has been estimated that North Korea has sent at least 15,000 troops to Russia to help its efforts in the Kursk region and that at least 6,000 have been killed.

Canada

The new Defence Investment Agency will be under the auspices of a new minister. There will be new legal changes that upgrade it to an independent agency, but there is no word on how the agency’s political oversight will change. Currently, the DIA is under two ministers: Secretary of State Stephen Fuhr and Public Services and Procurement Minister Joel Lightbound.

NATO is considering the GlobalEye Aircraft to replace the alliance’s current fleet of U.S.-built airborne warning and control aircraft. The GlobalEye is based on the Bombardier Global 6000 or 6500 airframe and is outfitted with Saab’s extended range radars and other surveillance systems.

South Korea is sweetening its submarine bid by saying that it will manufacture armoured vehicles in Canada if the submarine is chosen. The vehicle in question is the K-9 self-propelled howitzer, for which Hanwha has orders from six NATO nations: Finland, Norway, Poland, Turkiye, Estonia and Romania, as well as Australia, Egypt and Vietnam.
