US-Iran-G7
President Trump will arrive in France today for a three-day G7 summit at the town of Evian-les-Bains on Lake Geneva. (The town is known as an elite spa destination, and its springs are the source of the bottled water company Evian.) Allies will be keen to hear more details about the “peace deal” that Trump announced with Iran on Sunday. The deal is expected to be signed on Friday in Switzerland, according to President Trump and Pakistani negotiators.
President Trump announced that the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would also end, but not until the agreement is signed on Friday. The deal gives the two countries only 60 days to come to an agreement over Iran’s enriched uranium.
French President Macron stated that the French-UK mission to help open the Strait of Hormuz is ready. The French and Royal navies have been preparing themselves to assist with mine clearance.
Lebanon
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that Israeli forces will remain in southern Lebanon, and if Iran strikes, the IDF will strike Iran with full force. The US-Iran peace deal excludes Israel from it, but Iranian officials state that there needs to be security guarantees for Lebanon.

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, an iconic 11th-century monastery, was struck by a Russian drone. There are reports of a fire at the monastery, but no major structural damage was caused. Dozens of missiles and over 600 drones were fired into Ukraine overnight. Kyiv is demanding a response from UNESCO over the strikes, as the UN’s response to the war has been muted.
Anthropic-USGOV
On Friday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei a letter announcing export restrictions on the Claude-maker’s latest Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models. Usage by customers outside the U.S. and foreign nationals within the U.S. is prohibited. To comply, Anthropic disabled public access to the models. The restrictions come after Amazon researchers were able to “jailbreak” Fable 5 (which is Mythos 5 with guardrails designed to prevent it from answering prompts related to cybersecurity or biology-related topics) into providing information about security vulnerabilities.
Afghanistan
The Taliban sent a heavy presence to Herat to suppress protests. Hundreds of Taliban fighters with armoured vehicles and tanks arrived at the city. There were planned demonstrations on Friday afternoon protesting the detention of women in Herat.
