Iran Ceasefire
The US-Iranian ceasefire is due to expire tomorrow. Peace talks are in limbo as Iran will not sit at the table with the United States. President Trump announced that he does not want to extend the ceasefire.
The US boarded and seized an Iranian-linked tanker, named the Tifani, in international waters. The ship is capable of carrying 2 million barrels of crude oil, and it last reported its position on Tuesday morning near Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean.
Japan
Japan changed its position to allow the sale of military equipment. The abolished restrictions limited transfers of military equipment to five non-lethal categories. This means that Japan will be able to compete on the world stage with military equipment sales.
Canada
The release of the F-35 purchase review still lacks an immediate timeline. The Carney government originally set the deadline to the end of last summer. With each day the review is delayed, it becomes more likely that the government will commit to the full 88 F-35A order.
Canadian military recruitment is at a 30-year high. Defence Ministry David McGinty stated that the military received more than 44,000 applications over the past year to join the regular force, which is 62 percent higher than the year before. Of course, the issue going forward is how to retain those applications given a prolonged, not-so-modern recruitment system.
Mali
The Malian army claims that it has secured key western corridors from jihadists. They claim that the army neutralized numerous militants and dismantled several operational bases in response to the eighteen major attacks claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM).
Civic groups are suing the Malian military junta over its use of Russia’s Wagner group and the abuses and killings that ensued. TRIAL International, the Pan African Lawyers Union and the International Federation for Human Rights put forth their suit against the Malian government through the African Union’s human rights court. The suite is limited to events that occurred in 2022.
Sudan
A high-ranking paramilitary commander for the RSF, Maj. Gen. al-Nour Ahmed Adam, defected to Sudan’s military. The government announced that: “Doors are open to all those who lay down arms and join the path of national reconstruction”.Maj. Gen. al-Nour Ahmed Adam is one of the most senior commanders who has defected to the government.
After an objection raised by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan will put on hold a $1.5 billion sale of weapons to Sudan.
Pakistan
It is being reported that Pakistan is setting conditions before meeting the Afghan Taliban in talks in Urumqi. One of the conditions is that the Afghan Taliban will have to designate Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan as a terrorist group and eliminate its sanctuaries in Afghanistan.
