US-Iran

The U.S. launched strikes on Iran on Tuesday in retaliation for the downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, according to U.S. Central Command. Targets included Iranian air defences and radars near the waterway, a senior official said.

Iran struck Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan in response to the US retaliation.

President Trump announced on social media that Iran has taken too long to negotiate a peace deal. Trump is now considering attacking Iran’s energy infrastructure and bridges.

Taiwan

The Taiwanese army today used truck-mounted High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, for the first time. 32 test rockets were fired from a site near a river mouth on Taiwan’s western coast, which has been regarded as a potential landing point for invading Chinese forces. While the army fired test rockets with a limited range at targets less than 6 miles offshore, Taiwan has missiles for its HIMARS capable of reaching mainland China.

Ukraine

President Zelensky is under increasing pressure to ease political tensions between Ukraine and Poland. Zelensky issued a decree to name a Special Operations Forces military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which operated in the 1940s and 1950s. The historical UPA fought for Ukrainian independence from Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany, but is also accused of carrying out a genocide of ethnic Poles in Volhynia (now Volyn in Ukraine) in 1943-45.

North Korea

North Korea’s annual enriched uranium output capacity could soon rise 75%, with the opening of a new enrichment facility. The new facility in Yongbyon is estimated to house more than 9,000 centrifuges capable of producing roughly 160 kilograms of highly enriched uranium a year. North Korea’s total stockpile of highly enriched uranium is estimated at 2,100 kilograms, roughly a tenth of the size of the UK and France.

Denmark

Denmark’s acquisition of 27 F-35 fighter jets will cost 14 billion kroner (2.2 billion USD) more than originally planned, according to a report by the Danish National Audit Office. The auditors accused defence ministry officials of failing to report rising costs to parliament.

Pakistan

Pakistan carried out airstrikes on terrorist hideouts in Afghanistan along the border. The Pakistani military claims that 26 militants were killed. There has been an increase in Pakistani Taliban attacks, including one where six members of the Federal Constabulary (FC) were killed and two injured at a post in Musa Dara in Peshawar.
