US-Iran

The United States and Iran exchanged missile and drone strikes this weekend. Iran targeted its neighbours and attacked a couple of tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. These tit-for-tat strikes seemed escalatory, and there were concerns about the continuation of the US-Iran War. Iranian officials have been quoted as saying that ships are now allowed to transit the strait freely. Iran says that a technical talk with the United States will not take place for days.

Ukraine-Russia War

It appears that Russia has armed an LNG carrier in the Baltic Sea. Two heavy machine guns, likely the 12.7mm Kord heavy machine gun, have been observed mounted on the wings of the bridge of the Marshal Vasilevskiy. Estonian Border Guard surveillance aircraft also show what appear to be sandbagged firing positions and protective barriers surrounding the weapons.

Russian authorities have jailed Alexander Lunin, a Russian war veteran who called out to meet with President Putin over the war. Lunin threatened to revolt against the government if his request was denied.  In his video, Lunin stated that he wanted to address the alleged abuse of soldiers by military commanders. His video has been watched millions of times. The Kremlin stated that it is aware of his video, but has not watched it.

President Putin acknowledged that Ukrainian strikes have led to a “certain shortage” of fuel, but “it is not critical”. In a televised interview, Putin stated, “As for strikes against critical infrastructure in general, and energy infrastructure in particular, of course, these attacks on our infrastructure facilities create problems.”

Venezuela

Nearly 50,000 people are still missing in the wake of twin earthquakes which struck Venezuela last week. Relatives looking for family members have said the government response has been almost non-existent, despite thousands of soldiers sent to the affected areas. Bureaucracy has been holding up the rescue workers. The mayor of Medellín said airport authorities held up rescue workers from his city for hours, while a Spanish volunteer unit was disbanded after waiting at the airport for 2 days to obtain accreditation from Venezuelan authorities.

Germany

A shooting in the German city of Stade, to the west of Hamburg, has reportedly left at least 5 killed. Two suspects have been arrested, with no motive announced yet. Shots were fired near a youth centre.

Afghanistan-Pakistan

Taliban officials claim that Pakistani airstrikes have left at least 36 civilians dead and injured more than 160 others. Pakistan claims that it killed 29 militants in a ground operation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Uganda

Uganda’s leading media outlets are under military siege. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of the current president, ordered the closure of TV stations, newspapers, and radio outlets. It is unclear what sparked this, but on X Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba said: “I DO NOT believe in a free press! The press should be guided by cadres of the revolution.”

Mali

Human Rights Watch reports an increase in human rights abuses by JNIM, FLA and Malian Forces and Russian mercenaries. “Human Rights Watch remotely interviewed 34 people between April 26 and June 9, including 30 witnesses to abuses, as well as civil society members, community leaders, and journalists. Human Rights Watch also verified and geolocated four videos posted online, six photographs, and analyzed satellite imagery showing destroyed shelters. Human Rights Watch sent a letter to Mali’s justice minister on June 11 but received no response.”

Serbia

Student-led protests continue, even after President Aleksander Vučić stated that he would step down within weeks. Student-led protests have been ongoing since November 2024, following the collapse of a railway canopy in the northern city of Novi Sad. The incident killed 16 people and has been blamed on broader government mismanagement of construction projects and systemic corruption. Vučić has called the protests led by foreign agents intent on bringing his government down, and has been steadfast in his refusal to resign before the 2027 elections.

Syria

The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemns Israeli incursions and bombardment in the country’s south a day after violence near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Residents briefly fled from Israeli artillery fire. Israel says that it was a demilitarized zone in Syria.  According to a local organization, Sijil, Israel has conducted “300 operations or “violations” in Daraa and Quneitra provinces this month alone, including 70 incursions and 28 raids, sometimes detaining residents.”
